I'm not totally sure if this is a Spring MVC or Spring Data issue. I suspect it's a Spring MVC issue that's hard to replicate without Spring Data.

I think this is caused by a mix of AbstractHandlerMapping where some have a PathPatternParser and some do not.
Debugging the test I see that AbstractHandlerMapping.initLookupPath is called several times. The last call before the exception triggers a request.removeAttribute(UrlPathHelper.PATH_ATTRIBUTE) which causes RequestMappingInfoHandlerMapping.getMatchingMapping to fail.
Running SampleDataRestApplicationTests.testHome from https://github.com/philwebb/spring-boot/tree/gh-24805 will replicate the problem.

I'm wondering if this is a Spring Data issue caused by the use of an limited constructor. It looks to me like BasePathAwareHandlerMapping is trying to customize the ProducesRequestCondition of RequestMappingInfo instances. This line is calling a constructor that doesn't include the PathPatternsRequestCondition.
Unfortunately the constructor that I think needs to be called is private. I wonder if the combine method can be used? Either that, or perhaps we need a withProducesCondition(...) method.

That certainly sounds like a problem. The PathPatternParser on an AbstractHandlerMapping must be set before after afterPropertiesSet is called since that will initialize with either PatternsRequestCondition or PathPatternsRequestCondition depending on the parser used. The way in which it fails also fits. It means the HandlerMapping is configured for path patterns and therefore has cleared the cached String lookupPath but a PatternsRequestCondition is used which expects to find it.
Perhaps it is this recent change that might be the cause https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-data-rest/commit/b9c02938d1756da30ea0caa5880b143522741b84? In any case I suspect a Spring Data REST issue here. /cc @odrotbohm
