Hi team.
As we were looking in our logs we found out that somebody is trying to upload a file to our system. We figured out to reproduced it locally as we tried to reach out an endpoint that does not exist with request header Content-Type : multipart/*
. We would expect that the response of this request should be 404: NOT FOUND. Instead we received FileUploadException exception. We assume that first we should pass the path matching than parse the headers and body of the request.
Currently we are excluding multipart from the servlet but this will not work in case we have an endpoint working with multipart types.

The resolveLazily
flag in StandardServletMultipartResolver
is set to false
by default, but in your case you must be setting it to true
. If this is a Boot application, then this controlled with the spring.servlet.multipart.resolve-lazily
property, also false
by default.
This is probably a configuration issue, but if not please comment.

I do not think this is configuration issue because we do not expect requests to random paths with MIME type multipart/* to be accessible at all and to throw an error independent on the request. For me it makes more sense to check first if there is that path declared and then resolve multipart elements. I would expect that with this spring.servlet.multipart.resolve-lazily
set to true is the default behavior. We tried with some older versions of Spring boot from 2.3.12.RELEASE , 2.4.13 ,2.7.1.

My bad, I misinterpreted the default flag setting, so yes, this would happen with default settings. Nevertheless, arguments could be made, either for lazy parsing and search all mappings, or parsing immediately and rejecting an invalid request early on. If you prefer the former, than you have control to change that setting.
