I'm using Spring Boot 2.3.5 and encountered a problem when using validation constraints, in this case @ParametersAreNonnullByDefault on @Repository beans.

Outline:
When using a simple query like:
@Repository
public interface SimpleModelRepository extends JpaRepository<SimpleModel, Long> {
SimpleModel findTopByBusinessKey(@Param("businessKey") String businessKey);
}
and querying with an businessKey that does not exist, one would expect that the method returns null. It does.
But if I add the @ParametersAreNonnullByDefault annotation like:

@ParametersAreNonnullByDefault

Using Optional as return value solves the problem. But the annotation should not have an influence on the workflow imho.
I've read:

but they don't discuss the @ParametersAreNonnullByDefault annotation, especially because the annotation should only help IDEs for the parameter, not the return value.

Thanks for the detailed report and sample application. I believe that this is working as the Spring Data team intended due to @ParameteresAreNonnullByDefault being meta-annotated with @Nonnull. With the non-null constraint in place, the throwing of an exception is then explained by this section of the documentation to which you linked:
Once non-null defaulting is in place, repository query method invocations get validated at runtime for nullability constraints. If a query result violates the defined constraint, an exception is thrown. This happens when the method would return null but is declared as non-nullable (the default with the annotation defined on the package in which the repository resides).
