When I invoke .\gradlew test (I'm on Windows) for the attached testcase testcase.zip I get a stacktrace in JUnit's report file build/reports/tests/test/index.html. Thanks for the report and for the sample. The org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-hateoas starter module is specific to Spring MVC, as it has a transitive dependency on spring-boot-starter-web. This causes Security auto-configuration to attempt to configure Spring Security for MVC, resulting in the duplicate bean definition error when WebFlux is also on the classpath. There is an existing issue #16020 to address this.

You can fix the problem by excluding the spring-boot-starter-web dependency in your build file like this:

    implementation("org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-hateoas")  {
        exclude("org.springframework.boot", "spring-boot-starter-web")
    }

or just depend on Spring HATEOAS directly instead of using the starter:

    implementation("org.springframework.hateoas:spring-hateoas") 

Marking this for team attention to discuss if, and where, this limitation of spring-boot-starter-hateoas should be mentioned in the documentation.

This can be reproduced even without spring-hateoas. To reproduce, create an application from start.spring.io with starter-web, starter-webflux and starter-security.. Add a @Configuration class with @EnableWebFluxSecurity. Running the app and integration test will fail. Oddly, if spring.main.web-application-type is set to reactive in application.properties, the app starts up but the integration test still fails.

This happens because of the explicit @EnableWebfluxSecurity annotation. Without spring.main.web-application-type=reactive, the application is considered to be a spring-mvc application, and the auto-configuration switches on @EnableWebSecurity. The two annotations result in a clash. Setting spring.main.web-application-type=reactive prevents @EnableWebSecurity from being applied which is why it works. Since Spring Boot automatically applies @EnableWebSecurity and @EnableWebFluxSecurity, explicitly adding these is not required. This can be converted to a documentation issue for the spring-hateos limitation as Scott suggested.
